Disney and Lucasfilm offer Star Wars movie to Taika Waititi

January 17, 2020 by Gary Collinson

With Disney and Lucasfilm currently plotting the next phase of Star Wars movies following the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, it seems that the studios have identified Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit helmer Taika Waititi for the director’s chair on the next chapter in the iconic franchise.

According to THR, Waititi has been approached about taking on the reigns of a new Star Wars movie, and it’s unclear at this point whether this is the same project under development with Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, or a separate film.

Waititi recently directed an episode of the live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian on Disney+, and also lent his voice to the droid bounty hunter IG-11. He is currently in post on his next feature Next Goal Wins, and will follow that by reuniting with Marvel for Thor: Love and Thunder. He also remains attached to Warner Bros.’ long-gestating Akira movie.

Disney and Lucasfilm have a new Star Wars movie dated for December 2022, which was originally earmarked for the first instalment of the now-aborted trilogy from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Star Wars: The Last Jedi helmer Rian Johnson has also been developing his own trilogy, although there’s been little in the way of progress on that front and its status is currently unclear.
