Disney pulls Star Wars: Rogue Squadron from schedule, sets new Star Wars movies for 2025 and 2027

September 17, 2022 by Gary Collinson

This has most likely been on the cards since Lucasfilm delayed the project indefinitely after seeing Wonder Woman 1984 due to the filmmaker’s schedule, but it’s now been made official that Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron has been completely removed from Disney’s release calendar.

Announced back in 2020, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was being scripted by Matthew Robinson (Love and Monsters) and would have been a Top Gun-style standalone anthology movie following the daring Rebel Alliance pilots of Rogue Squadron.

Lucasfilm had originally set a Christmas Day 2023 release for Rogue Squadron, before delaying it indefinitely last year amid reports of creative differences between the studio and director. According to THR, it’s unclear whether Jenkins and Lucasfilm could revisit it at some point further down the line (it’s perhaps also worth noting that previous aborted movie projects centring on Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi ended up being reworked into Disney+ series).

With Star Wars vacating the Christmas 2023 spot, fans will now have to wait at least a further two years before we return to the galaxy far, far away on the big screen with as-yet-unrevealed projects set for December 19th 2025 and December 17th 2027.

As for what these releases might be, we know that Thor helmer Taika Waititi is working on a Star Wars project, although the filmmaker noted during the Thor: Love and Thunder press tour that it was still early days and the project was far from greenlit, while Marvel’s Kevin Feige hopes to squeeze a Star Wars sojourn into his insane MCU schedule and Star Wars: The Last Jedi helmer Rian Johnson remains keen to return to the franchise despite reports his planned trilogy is on the backburner.

While Disney and Lucasfilm’s big screen plans for the franchise still appear to be completely up in the air at present post-Sequel Trilogy, fans do have a crazy amount of Star Wars content to look forward to on Disney+ over the coming years, beginning with this month’s premiere of Star Wars: Andor.
