Disney working on Aladdin sequel with Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott all expected to return

February 13, 2020 by Gary Collinson

After giving the go-ahead to a spinoff movie centred on Billy Magnussen’s Prince Anders for the Disney+ streaming service this past December, it has now been announced that the Mouse House is officially working on a sequel to last year’s box office smash hit Aladdin.

Guy Ritchie is set to return to the director’s chair for the follow-up to the live-action remake, while John Gatins (Flight) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) have been tapped to write the script. Although not yet confirmed, it is also expected that stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott will be back reprising their roles as Genie, Aladdin, and Princess Jasmine (Massoud in particular will no doubt delighted, given that he recently said he hadn’t had a single audition since the film’s release).

As yet, there’s no word on a plot for Aladdin 2, although THR reports that Disney had previously held a writers room to generate ideas for the sequel, at which point the idea was floated to look at other stories from One Thousand and One Nights as possible sources of inspiration.

News of a sequel will come as little surprise, given that the remake of the beloved 1992 animated feature proved to be a huge success at the box office for Disney, grossing over $1 billion worldwide.
