Ed Brubaker to script Nicolas Winding Refn’s Maniac Cop remake

May 8, 2014 by Gary Collinson

It looks like the planned remake of the 80s exploitation classic Maniac Cop has taken a step closer to becoming a reality, with Screen Daily revealed that acclaimed comic book writer Ed Brubaker (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) has signed on to pen the script.

The new version of Maniac Cop is being spearheaded by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Only God Forgives), who will produce alongside William Lustig, director of the original film. A director for the remake is set to be announced at Cannes.

Released in 1988, the original starred Tom Atkins as the titular ‘Maniac Cop’ alongside Bruce Campbell; it was followed by two sequels, with Maniac Cop 2 arriving in 1990 and Maniac Cop III: Badge of Silence closing out the trilogy in 1993.
