Ewan McGregor talks Obi-Wan Kenobi return and the legacy of the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy

September 16, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Ewan McGregor, who is returning to Star Wars for the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, says the project is even more exciting than the Prequel Trilogy.

If you did a survey of Star Wars fans, Ewan McGregor’s return as Obi-Wan Kenobi would be high on the wish list. Fortunately, this is exactly what is happening with a Disney+ show set to film in 2021.

The series is going to take place in between Episode III and IV and McGregor has been talking about the show on this week’s The One Show (via Digital Spy). When asked if he could say much about the project, the actor said:

“No, not really. We start shooting in spring of next year. I’m very excited about it. I think we shot the last one I did in 2003 (Revenge of the Sith), so it’s been a while and I’m that much closer to Alec Guinness’ age now. So that was always the fun part about playing Obi-Wan Kenobi, for me, was to try and study Alec Guinness and think about maybe how he would have behaved in these scenes as a younger man. So now I’ll be a bit closer and it’ll be nice to sort of bridge that gap. It’s really exciting.”

Meanwhile, speaking to Empire, McGregor also discussed the legacy of the Prequel Trilogy, and how his opinion on the films and their impact has changed over the years:

“You know, our films weren’t much liked when they came out, by my generation who loved the first ones. I think people of our generation wanted to feel the way they’d felt when they saw those first three movies when they were kids, and George Lucas wanted to take our ones in a different direction, he had a different idea. It was tricky at the time, I remember.

“But now, all these years later, I’m really aware of what our films meant to the generation they were made for, the children of that time. They really like them. I’ve met people who, they mean a lot to them, those films, more so than the original three, and I’m like, ‘Are you kidding?'”

The Obi-Wan Kenobi show certainly has massive potential. Hopefully, production will go ahead as planned next year and it won’t be too long before we get to see it for ourselves.
