Fast X doesn’t hit top gear at the U.S. box office, but zooms off Internationally

May 22, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Fast X pulled up behind its pandemic affected predecessor at the domestic box-office this weekend, opening with $67.5 million.

$67.5 million might seem like a decent opening for the tenth installment of the Universal Pictures franchise, but 2021’s Fast 9 debuted with $70 million at a time when only 80% of theatres were open in North America, and this cost a whopping $340 million to produce, and that’s without taking into account the advertising spend. For comparison, 2013’s Fast and Furious 6 sped off with a $97 million debut, 2017’s The Fate of the Furious opened with $98 million, and 2015’s Furious 7 bowed with a franchise-high $148 million.

Fast X‘s success can be found on the international circuits, where the franchise hit the NOS for an impressive $251.39 million haul, including a post-pandemic Hollywood high in China, where it grossed $78 million. The film stands at $320 million global, and with little blockbuster competition before Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opens in June, it will hope to do a few more laps at the box-office.

The law of diminishing returns didn’t hurt Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which dropped an impressive 47% for a weekend haul of $32.8 million. The Guardians MCU swan song has so far earned $267 million domestically and $659 million worldwide.

Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved, and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything—and everyone—that Dom loves, forever.

In 2011’s Fast Five, Dom and his crew took out nefarious Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes and decapitated his empire on a bridge in Rio De Janeiro. What they didn’t know was that Reyes’ son, Dante (Aquaman’s Jason Momoa), witnessed it all and has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price.

Dante’s plot will scatter Dom’s family from Los Angeles to the catacombs of Rome, from Brazil to London and from Portugal to Antarctica. New allies will be forged and old enemies will resurface. But everything changes when Dom discovers that his own 8-year-old son (Leo Abelo Perry, Black-ish) is the ultimate target of Dante’s vengeance.

Fast X is directed by Louis Leterrier and features a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, John Cena, Jason Momoa, Brie Larson, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Scott Eastwood, Michael Rooker, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, Cardi B, Helen Mirren, Rita Moreno, Charlize Theron, and Gal Gadot.
