Fast X halts production as director Justin Lin exits over creative differences

April 27, 2022 by EJ Moreno

The Fast and Furious family will be down one member for  the tenth entry as Deadline reports that Justin Lin has stepped away from the director’s chair, and Fast X’s production is going on a brief hiatus.

Lin will remain on as a producer of the film, and Universal Pictures execs and producers are already on the hunt for Lin’s replacement. Sources close to Deadline note that the film is still expected to make its May 2023 release date. In a statement, Lin called the decision “difficult” and went on to say he has the support of Universal Pictures:

“With the support of Universal, I have made the difficult decision to step back as director of FAST X while remaining with the project as a producer. Over ten years and five films, we have been able to shoot the best actors, the best stunts, and the best damn car chases. On a personal note, as the child of Asian immigrants, I am proud of helping to build the most diverse franchise in movie history. I will forever be grateful to the amazing cast, crew, and studio for their support and for welcoming me into the FAST family.”

Deadline notes while there are no reported hard feelings between Lin and the studio, the director is stepping away from the franchise due to “creative differences.” Vin Diesel has been very public regarding the Fast & Furious epic finale; he recently took to social media to mention he had to fight to see Jordanna Brewster return. Many recall him publicly calling out for Dwayne Johnson to return to the franchise. Johnson took exception to that and sent some harsh words back.

Fast X will be split into two films to serve as a grand finale for the long-running franchise. While plot details are being kept under wraps for the final two films, the cast will include Vin Diesel, Sung Kang, Nathalie Emmanuel, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Charlize Theron, and franchise newcomers Jason Momoa and Brie Larson.

Fast X is currently set for release on May 19th, 2023.
