Reimagined version of The Color Purple gets a first trailer

May 22, 2023 by EJ Moreno

The Color Purple is back to touch a new generation with its gripping tale.

Taking its cue from the hit Broadway version, Blitz Bazawule’s new take will introduce songs to the story once brought to life by the iconic Steven Spielberg. In The Color Purple 2023, we see a musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel about the life-long struggles of an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s.

Nettie (Halle Bailey) and Celie (Phylicia Mpasi) are two young sisters who find themselves constantly dreaming about having a new life, one outside the daily discrimination and injustice they face, which allows them to go after what they want and feel like they belong.

Check out the trailer below…

Warner Bros. Pictures invites you to experience the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond in The Color Purple. This bold new take on the beloved classic is directed by Blitz Bazawule (“Black Is King,” “The Burial of Kojo”) and produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones.

The Color Purple stars Taraji P. Henson (“What Men Want,” “Hidden Figures”), Danielle Brooks (“Peacemaker,” “Orange Is the New Black”), Colman Domingo (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Fear the Walking Dead”), Corey Hawkins (“In the Heights,” “BlacKkKlansman”), H.E.R. (“Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration”), Halle Bailey (“The Little Mermaid,” “Grown-ish”), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“King Richard,” “If Beale Street Could Talk”), and Fantasia Barrino (in her major motion picture debut).

The Color Purple will open in North American theaters on December 25th, 2023, and internationally beginning on January 18th, 2024.
