Five Nights At Freddy’s director on having brutal kills with a PG-13 rating

October 23, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Five Nights At Freddy’s is the signature jump scare game, and transitioning that to the big screen in a “for everyone” way should be easy. But what about the infamous kills?

Well, director Emma Tammi claims she found a way to keep the kills just as brutal as you’d expect but still make that PG-13 rating so all game audiences could watch. Speaking to Inverse, the director explains how she found the perfect balance for the upcoming film, telling the outlet:

“We were trying to push it as far as we could while still retaining that PG-13 rating. That meant the kills needed to be executed in a certain way. And while it is so fun in many slasher films to see all the guts and the gore, it is also really fun to figure out creative ways to show these moments without showing all the details.”

“In some cases, we leaned into shadows and silhouettes and sound design to really feel the moment in an impactful way without showing any gore”, Tami adds. “So that is something that I had a lot of fun doing, and actually really appreciated that we were taking the PG-13 approach for this because there’s such a younger audience for FNAF, and we didn’t want to exclude them.”

You’ll get to see how Five Nights At Freddy’s handles its kills when the film arrives this week.

The movie follows a troubled security guard as he begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through.

Five Nights At Freddy’s stars Josh Hutcherson, Matthew Lillard, Piper Rubio, Elizabeth Lail, Mary Stuart Masterson, Lucas Grant, Kat Conner Sterling and Jessica Blackmore.

Five Nights At Freddy’s will be released in theaters and streaming on Peacock on October 27th.
