George Miller says don’t expect to see Mad Max: The Wasteland any time soon

May 24, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

While George Miller is in Cannes with his fantasy-romance Three Thousand Years of Longing, it has afforded journalists the opportunity to ask him about the sequels and prequels to his 2015 modern classic Mad Max: Fury Road, one of which is currently in production, and another that he says reveals is “further down the chain”.

In positive Mad Max news it was revealed during a discussion with Variety that Furiosa, the prequel to the 2015 blockbuster which sees Anya Taylor-Joy take the wheel from Charlize Theron’s iconic Furiosa, was on a hiatus following the filming of “a major sequence”, and that shooting will resume in Australia on May 24th. Miller also said that the prequel, which also stars Chris Hemsworth, will be “a saga” that spans a 15-year period. Sounds suitably epic.

Definitely not revving its engine anytime soon is the direct sequel to Fury Road, which had the working title of Mad Max: The Wasteland. Miller didn’t offer up any details, including whether Tom Hardy would want to endure such an arduous shoot again, but did say “We do have another story but it’s still not fully evolved”, adding that “We’ll see further down the chain.”
