Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep director wishes he could adapt The Dark Tower

September 3, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Over the past few years, Mike Flanagan has adapted a number of Stephen King novels including directing both Gerald’s Game for Netflix and last year’s The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep. Now, the filmmaker has named the Stephen King adaptation he would love to make.

During an interview at the Fantasia International Film Festival, Flanagan revealed that The Dark Tower would be the “Holy Grail” of Stephen King stories he would want to tell.

“I’ve got the answer that most Stephen King fans are going to have,” Flanagan said. “The Dark Tower is forever going to be the story I wish I could tell. That would be the Holy Grail. I mean, talk about an adaptation challenge… So many very talented people have poured so much time and heart and soul and blood, sweat, and tears trying to crack that.”

The Dark Tower was previously adapted in 2017 by director Nikolaj Arcel and starred Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, but the film was considered both a financial and critical disappointment following a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Following the 2017 film, Amazon Studios began developing The Dark Tower TV series as a complete reboot but ultimately opted against moving forward with the project.

Following on from two well-received Stephen King adaptations, giving Mike Flanagan a chance to develop his version of The Dark Tower might be the best choice for the franchise moving forward.
