Hamnet’s Jacobi Jupe joins Scarlett Johansson in Exorcist film

December 17, 2025 by Ricky Church

With Mike Flanagan putting his own spin on The Exorcist together, the director has cast young actor Jacobi Jupe (Hamnet) to star alongside the previously-announced Scarlett Johansson in the next installment of the iconic horror franchise.

Flanagan will write and direct the new Exorcist film, which will be an original idea and not connected to the latest film The Exorcist: Believer or any of the previous films. It has often been described as a reboot rather than a remake of the groundbreaking 1973 classic. The original film found two priests called to the home of a young girl and tasked with exorcising an evil demon from her body, beginning a night of wicked horrors for them and the family.

Johansson was announced as attached to star in Flanagan’s film last month and Jupe’s addition is the latest update we have on the film. It was originally slated for a 2026 release, but will more likely see a 2027 release as production was delayed due to Flanagan’s many other commitments. One of those commitments is his series adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie, starring Summer H. Howell as Carrie White. Production wrapped in October and is expected to premiere on Prime Video in 2026.

Meanwhile, Johansson is also in talks to star alongside Robert Pattinson in The Batman Part II from Matt Reeves. Rumours over her potential character have been swirling, but there will be no concrete details on who she could play for quite some time as The Batman Part II won’t begin filming until the spring. Production on The Exorcist will take place in New York City sometime in 2026.
