Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter returning for Avengers: Doomsday (as is Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange)

December 13, 2024 by Gary Collinson

Well, we all thought Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter got a perfect send-off in Avengers: Endgame, but it seems the couple may not live happily ever after as hot on the heels of the news that Chris Evans is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes word from Deadline that he’ll also be joined by Hayley Atwell who’ll be back as Agent Carter in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday.

News of Evans’ casting broke earlier this week, although reports stopped short of confirming his character, leading to some speculation as to whether he’d be playing Steve, Old Steve, or maybe even another version of Johnny Storm following his Deadpool & Wolverine appearance. We can presumably scratch the latter now we know that Peggy will also be making a return, and with Anthony Mackie confirmed as remaining the MCU’s Captain America in Doomsday rumours are now circulating that Evans’ Steve Rogers may appear in his Nomad identity.

Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch has also confirmed his inclusion in the cast of Doomsday, with the Doctor Strange star telling TV Groove that “I’m really excited not only to work with the Russo brothers again but also to have Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom. I think there’s going to be some really cool developments ahead, and I’m excited to see what happens next.”

We last saw Doctor Strange preparing to tackle a multiversal incursion alongside Charlize Theron’s Thea in the post-credit scene of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, although there’s been no word yet whether we can expect to see Theron making her Avengers debut in the film. We do know however that Downey, Evans, Atwell, Mackie and Cumberbatch will be joined by Fantastic Four stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and that we can expect to be writing a tonne of these casting stories over the coming weeks and months as we head towards production.

Avengers: Doomsday is set for release on May 1st 2026.
