HBO president dismisses Westworld criticism, says “it’s not for casual viewers”

July 25, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Despite garnering 21 nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards earlier this month, the second season of HBO’s Westworld struggled to match the ratings it delivered first time around, with the show finding itself coming in for some criticism due to its increasingly complex storytelling.

During the Television Critics Association press tour, HBO president Casey Bloys was asked about this “backlash”, and whether this will be taken into account with the upcoming third season. And, it seems the cable network isn’t too concerned, with Bloys stating that the show is “not for casual viewers”.

“I wouldn’t agree that the backlash was widespread” said Bloys. “The people who love it really love it, even the people who dislike it feel the need to discuss it and talk about it, and let you know they dislike it, and debate. And for a show to arouse that kind of feeling, that’s what we want. It’s not for casual viewers (the show), it requires your attention. Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy like to challenge their viewers and many feel rewarded by that. It’s a unique show and that’s what we’re looking for.”
