Legendary director James Cameron says that he doesn’t think he could have directed James Wan’s Aquaman due to its unrealistic underwater sequences.
Although James Cameron is one of the most successful directors in movie history, having helmed such iconic pictures as Terminator, Titanic, and Avatar, he doesn’t think he would have been able to make DC’s Aquaman.
Why? Well, in a recent interview with Yahoo!, Cameron explained that the physics behind the movie would have been a problem with him: “I think it’s great fun. I think it’s a movie I never could have made. Truthfully, I never could have made that film because it requires this kind of total dream-like disconnect from any sort of physics or reality.
“It exists in kind of somewhere between a Greek mythical landscape and a fairy tale landscape and people just zoom around underwater because they propel themselves mentally, I guess. But it’s cool, you buy it on its own terms.”
Cameron is a record-setting underwater diver himself and knows a thing or two about filming beneath the sea with The Abyss, his various documentaries, and the upcoming Avatar sequels, and this is one reason why Aquaman wouldn’t have been a film he would make:
“I’ve spent thousands of hours underwater and I’m very literal about my underwater. It needs to look like it’s real and while I can enjoy that film [Aquaman], I don’t resonate with it because it doesn’t look real. By the way, it doesn’t actually help us with our issues of actually understanding the ocean and exploring the ocean and preserving the ocean. Although they did throw in a couple of things with whales and things like that to remind us that we are kind of using the ocean as a toilet and as a garbage dump, so I applaud the film for that.
“Yeah, I couldn’t have made that movie.”
We will get to see Cameron’s next take on an underwater blockbuster spectacle when his Avatar sequels release starting in December 2020.

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry, Julie Andrews as Karathen and Graham McTavish as King Atlan.
