Jim Carrey believes the initial backlash towards Sonic the Hedgehog “turned out to be a great thing”

February 17, 2020 by Liam Waddington

When the first trailer was released for Sonic the Hedgehog, the film received a substantial amount of criticism for the initial design of Sonic, leading to a complete overhaul of the character to meet the demands of the fans. Whether you agree with this form of audience interaction or not, Dr. Robotnik actor Jim Carrey believes the backlash “turned out to be a great thing” for the film.

“I think it turned out to be a great thing. I think It turned out to be a co-op where everybody was in on the creation,” Carrey said in an interview with Fox News. “I think everybody felt good about it ultimately because [director] Jeff Fowler [had] no ego involved at all. He just went, ‘These people grew up with it, and it’s important to them that we get it right.’ And I think it was just a much better movie because of it.”

Despite the initial negativity towards the film, Sonic the Hedgehog is turning out to be a success for Paramount so far after opening to $100 million worldwide and breaking the domestic record for video game movies by surpassing Pokemon: Detective Pikachu.
