Katherine Waterston joins Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

June 15, 2015 by James Garcia

The upcoming Harry Potter spinoff film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, has found its female lead. The studio has announced that Inherent Vice actress Katherine Waterston has landed the role of Porpetina, a witch who hails from the United States and meets up with Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander in New York City.

Waterston was in contention for the role alongside Elizabeth Debicki and Kate Upton. The role of Porpetina’s sister, Queenie, is still up for grabs, and is reportedly being eyed by Saoirse Ronan, Dakota Fanning, Lili Simmons and Alison Sudol.

WB’s Greg Silverman released the following statement to announce Waterston’s casting:

“Katherine Waterston is a rising star, who was a revelation in our film Inherent Vice, earning the praise of both critics and audiences. We are thrilled to have her back in the Warner Bros. family, especially in one of our most anticipated titles for 2016, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

Written by J.K. Rowling and directed by four-time Harry Potter alum David Yates, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will bow on November 18, 2016.
