Kevin Feige says Captain Marvel is about to lead the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe

March 18, 2019 by Gary Collinson

The times they are a-changin’ for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Avengers: Endgame set to bring the curtain down on one chapter of the MCU and launch us into a brand new Phase of the blockbuster superhero world.

It’s widely expected that Endgame will mark the end of the story for several prominent characters from the first ten years of the MCU, with fresh faces taking centre stage as we head into a new decade. And, after a triumphant solo debut (with over $760 million at the box office in just ten days), Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is set to be at the forefront of this new-look MCU, as confirmed by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

“When we found out that Brie Larson might be interested in joining our world, we had a number of meetings,” said Feige in the official Captain Marvel Movie Special magazine. “She was a huge fan of the character in the comics. One of the highlights of my career at Marvel was introducing her at Comic-Con and having her come out on stage and stand there with literally almost everybody else from our movies. There she was at the forefront, and it was a great foreshadowing – not just for how audiences are going to embrace Brie as this character, but also for how Captain Marvel is about to take the lead and be at the forefront of the entire Cinematic Universe.”

The news probably isn’t too surprising, given that Larson has a seven-film deal with Marvel, and the studio has spent much time touting her character Carol Danvers as the most powerful hero in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Are you looking forward to seeing more of Captain Marvel? Is she the right character to become the new centerpiece of the MCU? Let us know your thoughts in the comments or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
