Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie and Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron scrapped by Lucasfilm

March 8, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

While Disney and Lucasfilm have been successfully expanding the Star Wars universe on Disney+, it appears that resurrecting the big-screen fortunes of the franchise has been like trying to navigate the Hoth Asteroid Field. A fact now underlined by the disappointing news that both Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie and Patty Jenkins Rogue Squadron have officially been consigned to the Sarlacc Pit.

Announced to much fanfare at the 2020 Disney Investor Day, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron has had a bumpy ride ever since, with Patty Jenkins taking to social media as recently as December last year to insist that the film was still in development.

Things had been a little quieter when it comes to the proposed Star Wars movie from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. He had previously spoken about his plans, and a writer had reportedly been hired to pen the movie, but then revealed that it wasn’t “anywhere near being talked about yet”.

All of this makes Variety’s report that both films are no longer in development about as surprising as what an Ewok does in the woods of Endor.

This Order 66-style cancellation of films leaves only the Damon Lindelof scripted Star Wars project, which has Ms Marvel‘s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached to direct, and Taika Waititi’s long-gestating solo-outing remaining.

There is a brief update on the latter, with sources telling Variety that the Thor: Love and Thunder director continues to work on his Star Wars feature, and he will probably look to star in the film as well.

Let us know whether you were looking forward to either Kevin Feige or Patty Jenkins Star Wars movies by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
