“When King Numedides lay dead at my feet and I tore the crown from his gory head and set it on my own, I had reached the ultimate border of my dreams. I had prepared myself to take the crown, not to hold it. In the old free days all I wanted was a sharp sword and a straight path to my enemies. Now no paths are straight and my sword is useless,” – Conan.
The nomadic Cimmerian’s transition from wandering adventurer, sell-sword, pirate, and warrior to the monarch of Aquilonia was not an easy one. Conan valued action over the mire of bureaucratic society which he was forced to navigate and be the figurehead of with his wife: Queen Zenobia, and son: Prince Conn by his side.
Howard’s first Conan story, “The Phoenix on the Sword” introduced us to Conan as King of Aquilonia, pining for his care-free adventuring days. This story also introduced us to Thoth-Amon, the Stygian sorcerer whose dark influence would vex the Cimmerian from the shadows. This conspiracy would ultimately lead to the divine intervention that would bless Conan’s blade with the mark of the phoenix.
If The Phoenix on the Sword is the beginning for King Conan, The Hour of the Dragon bookends his story as Howard’s only Conan novel. This tale follows an overthrown Conan and the introduction of Zenobia, a slave who would become his queen.

Banished to the Pits of Arallu for more than a millennia, the sorcerer remained captive until The Devourer of Souls came to barter, seeking forbidden knowledge of the elder gods. Thulsa Doom exchanged this knowledge for his freedom but in doing so put all of creation at risk at the hands of the Devourer. Ever the survivor, Doom beseeched Conan to thwart this nefarious plot, leading to their unlikely alliance.
Following the saga of Wrarrl, The Devourer of Souls, Thulsa Doom and Conan travelled the road to Koth together. This ill-fated alliance would result in deceit, death, and betrayal as chronicled in “The Seven Lives of Thulsa Doom!”
