Krypto arrives in new Superman image

October 15, 2024 by Ricky Church

Superman director James Gunn has revealed a new addition to the superhero cast with a fan-favourite furball making his live-action debut. On Instagram Gunn revealed a new image which shows Superman alongside his pet dog Krypto on the moon. See the image below…

Krypto was created in 1955 by Otto Binder and legendary Superman artist Curt Swan, debuting in the pages of Adventure Comics. Krypto was an animal on Krypton who belonged to the El family and, in his first appearance, was used as a test subject by Jor-El in a prototype rocket for Kal-El. His rocket was knocked off course, but eventually made its way to Earth to reunite with Kal-El, now known as Clark Kent and Superman.

Krypto has been a pretty constant member of the Superman family, becoming a fan-favourite among Superman’s supporting characters. He has appeared in several animated series or films and brief appearances in live-action TV series, even leading his own feature film in 2022’s DC League of Super-Pets, but Superman will mark his live-action debut on the big screen in a Superman or DC film.

This version of Krypto was inspired by Gunn’s own dog Ozu, who he adopted around the time he began writing Superman and says “thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life.”

What do you think of Krytpo’s upcoming appearance in Superman? Are you excited to see the Dog of Steel on the big screen? Let us know on our social channels at @flickeringmyth…

Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer, Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Milly Alcock as Supergirl, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as Jonathan and Martha Kent and Alan Tudyk in a mystery role.

Superman will be released on July 11th, 2025.
