Luca Guadagnino would like to direct a remake of The Mummy

November 12, 2022 by EJ Moreno

We all know Universal will once again tackle The Mummy. After the original 1932 film, the iconic 1999 remake, and the not-so-beloved 2017 remake, we need a correct, updated version of the story. And if the studio was ever looking for a director to breathe life into The Mummy once more, Call Me By Your Name filmmaker Luca Guadagnino has let it be known that he’d like a shot.

In a recent interview with Collider to promote his new film Bones and All, the director of 2018’s Suspiria was asked if there were another horror classic he’d like to tackle. Collider notes that the filmmaker got excited about the question, and Guadagnino explains why he’d pick 1932’s The Mummy as his choice.

“It’s a rotten body in rotten bandages, so what’s inside is [as] interesting as what’s outside. It should be very scary and very, very terminal. It should be a little movie but with a lot of depth and very scary,” says Guadagnino.

He adds, “There is a Joe Dante Mummy that never happened that I feel so bad about because Joe is such a master, and I am sure he would have made something incredible.”

You can see the work of Luca Guadagnino next in Bones and All [read our review here], and he is currently in production on the Zendaya tennis movie Challengers, set for release in August 2023.

Love blossoms between a young woman on the margins of society and a disenfranchised drifter as they embark on a 3,000-mile odyssey through the backroads of America. However, despite their best efforts, all roads lead back to their terrifying pasts and a final stand that will determine whether their love can survive their differences.

Joining Taylor Russell and Timothee Chalamet in the cast of Bones and All are Mark Rylance, Michael Stuhlbarg, André Holland, Chloë Sevigny, David Gordon-Green, Jessica Harper, and Jake Horowitz.

Bones and All arrives in cinemas on November 23rd.
