Mackenzie Davis says Terminator: Dark Fate suffered due to franchise fatigue

December 2, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Despite Terminator: Dark Fate receiving the best reviews for a Terminator film in decades, the sixth instalment had disappointing worldwide box office numbers which have put the future of the franchise in jeopardy.

Now, during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, star Mackenzie Davis pointed out that she believes the film suffered as a result of audiences growing tired of the franchise.

“I loved the experience of making that movie. It was hard and rigorous, as I’ve already said, but the people were amazing,” Davis said. “Tim was an incredible director, just so dedicated and devoted to making it the best thing it could be. As far as the box office and stuff, it’s Terminator 6, nobody saw the last three, I get it, it’s okay, I don’t think that means what we made was bad, but I understand that the audience’s appetite has been exhausted.”

She continued, “How much you attribute that to there being three women in the lead, I don’t know, I never really wanted to engage with that stuff because I can’t control it. I am a woman and I really liked the part and I felt proud of what I did so I couldn’t be like, ‘No one’s seeing it because they’re sexist.’ It seemed like an easier answer for me to be like, ‘Alright, six is too much, now we know.'”

It is hard to argue with Davis’ opinion regarding the franchise after the release of Terminator: Dark Fate as the film took in just $261.1 million worldwide on a reported production budget of $185 million.

Terminator: Dark Fate is directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool), with James Cameron producing, and sees Arnold Schwarzenegger (T-800) and Linda Hamilton (Sarah Connor) reprising their roles alongside new cast additions Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049), Natalia Reyes (Lady), Diego Boneta (Pretty Little Liars) and Gabriel Luna (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).
