Mad Max: The Wasteland possibly on hold due to lackluster Furiosa box office

June 1, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga stormed into cinemas with considerable fanfare but little box office return. Could that have paused any future films?

While the new George Miller film is still in its early days at the box office, it’s not looking good for the movie, which had a $168 million budget, to have only $68.1 million in its run so far. Now, The Hollywood Reporter is hinting that the development of its follow-up, Mad Max: The Wasteland, is being halted.

When crafting Fury Road, Miller and Nico Lathouris wrote scripts for both The Wasteland and Furiosa. Miller’s The Wasteland was set to follow Max Rockatansky in the year before Fury Road and is said to involve a young mother.

The filmmaker seemed to know it was all hinging on the box office for Furiosa. “I’ll definitely wait to see how this [Furiosa] goes before we even think about it,” Miller told journalists at Cannes. But what led to this?

Some are saying that the problem is getting people back into theaters, or they could be generally disinterested in this version of Mad Max without the titular hero. Only time will tell but Furiosa is still early into its run, and is still the only major release playing in IMAX and premium large-format screens.

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus.  Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Directed by George Miller, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Alyla Browne, Nathan Jones, Angus Sampson, Quaden Bayles, Danile Webber, and Lachy Hulme.

Furiosa is in cinemas now.
