Marvel casts Harrison Ford as Thunderbolt Ross in Captain America 4

October 17, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Rumours were doing the rounds at the start of the month that Lucasfilm had reportedly blocked Marvel from announcing Harrison Ford’s induction to the MCU at Disney’s D23 Expo so that the focus could remain firmly on his final outing as Indiana Jones. Now multiple sources are confirming that he has indeed been cast as General Thunderbolt Ross, and will make his debut in Captain America: New World Order.

The news that Ford would be replacing the late William Hurt as General Thunderbolt Ross came from the same source that broke the story a couple of weeks ago. Reporter Jeff Sneider Tweeted that “Harrison Ford HAS, in fact, been cast as Gen. Thunderbolt Ross, who is expected to make his first appearance in… CAPTAIN AMERICA 4.” The story has also been independently confirmed by SlashFilm.

Ford’s take on Thaddeus Ross would be introduced in Julius Onah’s Captain America: New World Order (3 May, 2024), which will see Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson make his big-screen debut as the shield-slinging superhero, before joining a star-studded line-up of antiheroes for Thunderbolts (26 July, 2024).

UPDATE: All of the above has now been confirmed by Deadline, with Ford now officially on board as William Hurt’s replacement as Thunderbolt Ross… and Red Hulk? “Don’t make me grumpy… You wouldn’t like me when I’m grumpy…”

Jake Schreier will direct Thunderbolts, which stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent and Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster.
