Mindy Kaling’s Velma to premiere on HBO Max in January

December 21, 2022 by Ricky Church

HBO Max has announced Mindy Kaling’s animated Scooby-Doo prequel Velma will premiere on the streamer January 12th, 2023.

Velma follows Mystery Inc. member Velma Dinkley before she met Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Fred and Daphne and explores how she became a renowned detective. Kaling is voicing Velma as well as producing and writing the series.

The premiere comes not long after Velma came out of the closet as a lesbian in the recent Halloween-themed animated movie Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!. It is unknown if this addition (or finally saying the subtext out loud) in the franchise will make its way into Velma and other Scooby-Doo projects in the future.
