Neil Gaiman announces Good Omens 2 for Amazon with Michael Sheen and David Tennant returning

June 29, 2021 by Ricky Church

Author Neil Gaiman announces he and Amazon Prime are developing Good Omens 2, a new limited series continuing the Good Omens story with Michael Sheen and David Tennant to return as the angel and demon Aziraphale and Crowley respectively.

Gaiman made the announcement on his blog with the news Good Omens director Douglas Mackinnon is also returning for the new season. He also revealed he asked British actor, comedy writer and radio host John Finnemore to collaborate with him on writing the continuation.

Good Omens was published in 1990 from Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. The book followed the unlikely duo of an angel and demon placed on Earth as they attempt to prevent the coming Apocalypse from the son of Satan. With a host of other colourful characters, they have to stop both Heaven and Hell from beginning the end of times. Good Omens became a huge success and Amazon adapted it to a limited series in 2019. Though it was never written, Gaiman and Pratchett did discuss ideas for what a second book may be and while they never got to work on it prior to Pratchett’s passing, Gaiman did use some ideas of their sequel in the miniseries and will incorporate more of their story into the second season.

“It’s been thirty-one years since Good Omens was published, which means it’s thirty-two years since Terry Pratchett and I lay in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and plotted the sequel. (I got to use bits of the sequel in the TV series version of Good Omens — that’s where our angels came from.) Terry was clear on what he wanted from Good Omens on the telly. He wanted the story told, and if that worked, he wanted the rest of the story told,” Gaiman wrote on his blog.

While light on details, Good Omens 2 will see Aziraphale and Crowley getting back to easy living amongst mortals in London’s Soho when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery.

“There are so many questions people have asked about what happened next (and also, what happened before) to our favourite Angel and Demon,” Gaiman said. “Here are, perhaps, some of the answers you’ve been hoping for. As Good Omens continues, we will be back in Soho, and all through time and space, solving a mystery which starts with one of the angels wandering through a Soho street market with no memory of who they might be, on their way to Aziraphale’s bookshop. (Although our story actually begins about five minutes before anyone had got around to saying “Let there be Light”.)”

“Personally I’m against it, but the world isn’t going to just save itself, is it?” said Michael Sheen. “If David and I can manage to not fall out too badly this time it may even have a chance of getting finished.”

“The return of Good Omens is great news for me, personally,” said David Tennant. “As I get to work with Michael again, and I get to say Neil’s wonderful words once more. It’s probably less good for the universe as it almost certainly means there will be some fresh existential threat to its existence to deal with, but, you know – swings and roundabouts.”
