Patty Jenkins left Thor: The Dark World as she couldn’t “make a good movie out of the script”

March 26, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Before Alan Taylor was brought on to direct Thor: The Dark World, director Patty Jenkins, who is now known to superhero fans for helming Wonder Woman for DC, signed on to helm the Thor sequel for Marvel. However, Jenkins quickly left the project after three months due to “creative differences.”

Now, in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Jenkins has revealed she departed the project because she didn’t believe she could “make a good movie out of the script they were planning on doing.”

“I did not believe that I could make a good movie out of the script that they were planning on doing. I think it would have been a huge deal—it would have looked like it was my fault. It would’ve looked like, ‘Oh my God, this woman directed it and she missed all these things.’ That was the one time in my career where I really felt like, Do this with [another director] and it’s not going to be a big deal. And maybe they’ll understand it and love it more than I do,” Jenkins explained. “You can’t do movies you don’t believe in. The only reason to do it would be to prove to people that I could. But it wouldn’t have proved anything if I didn’t succeed. I don’t think that I would have gotten another chance. And so, I’m super grateful.”

Jenkins continued to explain how she has nothing but positivity towards Marvel and believes Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi is the right director for the character.

“I really have nothing but positive things to say about Marvel, because, honestly, they gave me that chance in the first place and it was not en vogue to do so,” she said. “They found Thor’s rightful director. Taika Waititi’s so good for Thor. Oh my God, I love that movie. His tone with [Thor: Ragnarok] was just masterful. That felt like pure Taika to me.”

Unfortunately, Patty Jenkins’ much-anticipated Gal Gadot-led sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, has recently been delayed due to the current cinema shutdowns. The film is now set to release on 14th August 2020 instead of its initial date of 6th June 2020.

Wonder Woman 1984 reunites director Patty Jenkins with stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Ewen Bremner (Charlie), Said Taghmaoui (Sameer), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe), Doutzen Kroes (Venelia) and new additions Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters) as Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah, Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) as Maxwell Lord, and Natasha Rothwell (Love, Simon), Ravi Patel (Master of None, Grandfathered), and Gabriella Wilde (Doctor Who, Poldark) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
