Phil Lord and Chris Miller to adapt Artemis from The Martian author

September 27, 2017 by Ricky Church

Former Han Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have found a new project over at Fox. Per Deadline, the pair will direct Artemis, a sci-fi film that will be adapted from The Martian authors Andy Weir’s upcoming novel. Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood will produce the film while Lord and Miller will work with Fox to find a writer to adapt the novel into a script.

In the wake of their departure from the Star Wars spin-off, there was a lot of speculation over whether or not they would return to direct The Flash for Warner Bros. The reason they decided to adapt Weir’s Artemis was apparently because of “the opportunity it gives them to build from scratch a world that is a departure from past directing efforts that have included The LEGO Movie and the 21 Jump Street franchise”.

The synopsis for Artemis reads:

Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you’re not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you’ve got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down. But pulling off the impossible is just the start of her problems, as she learns that she’s stepped square into a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself—and that now, her only chance at survival lies in a gambit even riskier than the first.

Artemis is set to be published on November 17.
