Rian Johnson to capture the “spirit” of Star Wars with his new trilogy

April 4, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Rian Johnson has revealed some of his thinking behind his new Star Wars trilogy, saying that he wants to capture the spirit of the saga.

Lucasfilm were so pleased with how things went with Rian Johnson and his work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi that they decided to give him his own trilogy, separate from the Skywalker saga.

And even though fans weren’t unanimous in their love for The Last Jedi, the mysterious project is still going full steam ahead. So far we know essentially nothing about Johnson’s trilogy but in a recent interview with Digital Spy, the director commented on his mindset going into the early stages:

“I’m looking at everything right now. I’m honestly just in this very nice ‘OK, what is this thing going to be?’ phase. Really, the only goal I have is to think about how Star Wars made me feel as a kid. And that’s it. I’m trying to capture: what is that, if it’s not iconography that we recognize, necessarily, from the original trilogy? What captures that spirit? What can be that for a kid who’s never heard of Star Wars? It’s getting back to the very fundamental questions of what makes this what it is.”

It’s certainly going to be fascinating to see just what Johnson comes up with and to see him answer the question he posed about how to capture the spirit of Star Wars without the iconography so heavily present in recent films.
