ROM and M.A.S.K. movies unlikely to be moving forward as part of Hasbro’s cinematic universe

January 21, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in April 2016, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro announced plans to launch a cinematic universe based around Hasbro’s classic toy properties G.I. Joe, Micronauts, Visionaries, ROM: Spaceknight and M.A.S.K., tapping Akiva Goldsman to oversee a writers room that included a host of in-demand screenwriters, including John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Spider-Man: Homecoming).

Since then, the studio has set release dates for G.I. Joe (March 27th 2020) and Micronauts (October 16th 2020), but it seems the plans haven’t quite come off as intended, with Daley and Goldstein telling IGN that at least two of the properties – ROM and M.A.S.K. – are unlikely to be moving forward.

“Those are probably not likely to see the light of day, unless they’re moving on separate from us,” said Goldstein. “It’s a funny thing. We spent three weeks in a room with a lot of talented writers. We broke 11 or so movies and, I don’t know. It just kind of went into the vortex. There’s been some leadership changes at Paramount, so it’s hard to say. Nobody’s contacted us about those.”

At this point it’s also unclear whether Paramount and Hasbro still intend for G.I. Joe and Micronauts to exist in the same universe, so hopefully we’ll find out more about the studio’s plans soon.

Daley and Goldstein meanwhile are set to join another cinematic universe, with the duo signing on to direct Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe release Flashpoint.
