Rumour: Joker origin movie targeting an R-rating due to female nudity

August 10, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With the Joker movie moving full steam ahead towards a planned September production start date, a new rumour has surfaced via Geeks WorldWide which states that the film will be targeting an R-rating.

Considering the project has been described as a gritty take on the Clown Prince of Crime’s origins, an R-rating certainly wouldn’t come as a surprise, nor would it be much of a risk for Warner Bros. given that the film is said to have a budget of around $55 million, much less than your typical superhero movie.

According to the site, the reason for the R-rating will be down to nudity “in some smaller female roles”, with the site speculating that director Todd Phillips is looking to cast actresses as strippers.

This isn’t the only upcoming DC project that appears to be targeting an R-rating, with Margot Robbie revealing to us last month that the Harley Quinn-led Birds of Prey is also expected to be rated-R. Meanwhile, the extended version of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also received an R-rating for its home entertainment release.

Joker is slated for release on October 4th 2019 and sees Joaquin Phoenix leading the cast as the Clown Prince of Crime alongside Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story) and Marc Meron (GLOW).
