Scott Pilgrim Takes Off season 2 unlikely: “It’s self-contained for now”

November 26, 2023 by Ricky Church

Scott Pilgrim recently returned with Netflix’s anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off as an adaptation of the beloved graphic novel series. However, those hoping for further adventures with Scott may be disappointed as a second season is currently unlikely by the design of the series’ creators.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off follows Scott Pilgrim as he meets Ramona Flowers at a party. Soon after the two have their first date, Scott learns he must fight and defeat Ramona’s seven evil exes of the League of Evil Exes in order to officially be her boyfriend. The Scott Pilgrim series was created by Bryan Lee O’Malley, who wrote and illustrated the six graphic novels, with Edgar Wright directing the film adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. The World starring Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is developed by O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski (Are You Afraid of the Dark?) with Wright executive producing. In an interview with Rolling Stone, both O’Malley and Grabinski downplayed the possibility of a second season as they crafted this latest adaptation as a self-contained story where they put all their ideas into it just in case either they would not have been renewed for a second season or their cast, who all reprised their roles from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and have made busy careers in the decade-plus since its release, would not be available for further seasons.

“It’s self-contained for now,” O’Malley told the magazine. “We loved what we did. We put it all in there. We don’t have any ideas lying on the floor. We pretty much put them all in. I never say never, but right now, it seems like it would take about 50 different miracles simultaneously for another season to happen. So we’ll see.”

The thought of a show running past its prime or getting cancelled despite its potential was also a part of O’Malley’s thoughts. “People are always complaining about how shows get canceled after one season. So we hedged our bets immediately, and tried to make a self-contained one season.”

“We’re not working on it. We have no official ideas,” Grabinski said, echoing O’Malley’s thoughts. “We put everything we had into this, and we think it has a really great ending that we’re proud of. I don’t make any plans in general. Maybe some day one of us will text each other an idea that’s really great for a Season Two. But for now, my entire brain and heart is in this thing, and just getting it out into the world.”

Scott Pilgrim meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, but learns he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. Then things get even more complicated.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is written by the graphic novel’s creator Brian O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, and brings back the recognisible voices from Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World including Michael Cera as the titular character, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Jason Schwartzmen as Gideon Graves, Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, Brie Larson as Natalie V. “Envy” Adams, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Ellen Wong as Knives Chau and Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is available to stream on Netflix.
