Shelley Duvall returning to acting for horror-thriller The Forest Hills

October 29, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Shelley Duvall is set to make her return to the screen for her first project in two decades, with Deadline revealing that The Shining star has joined the cast of the independent horror-thriller The Forest Hills.

Written and directed by Scott Goldberg, The Forest Hills follows a mentally and emotionally disturbed man who finds himself tormented by nightmarish visions following a head injury camping in the Catskill Mountains.

Chiko Mendez will play the camper, with Duvall as his mother and Edward Furlong (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) and horror icon Dee Wallace also featuring in the cast.

“We are huge fans of The Shining and it’s honestly one of my favorite horror movies of all time, up there with John Carpenter’s Halloween and George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead with the dark tones they delivered in their movies, along with perfect scores and elements that make them my personal favorites,” said Goldberg. “Shelley contributed to The Shining being an absolute masterpiece by giving her all, and performing in a way that really showcased the fear and horror of a mother in isolation.”

Duvall was last seen on the big screen in the 2002 comedy Manna from Heaven, after which she retired from acting and public life. She subsequently re-emerged in 2016 for an interview on Dr. Phil, which came under fire as exploitative with the actress opening up about her mental health struggles.
