Smallville’s Tom Welling still hopeful for animated continuation

February 23, 2022 by Ricky Church

Smallville star Tom Welling has made no secret in the past few years that he would like to continue telling the story of Superman in Smallville‘s continuity through animated form and this past weekend he gave a little update to project he and his co-star Michael Rosenbaum have been developing.

Welling starred as Clark Kent in his early youth for all ten seasons of Smallville, ending with him finally donning the cape and becoming Superman. He reprised the role briefly in the Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths as an older and retired Clark with Erica Durance reprising her role as Lois Lane for the cameo. Welling has, however, spoken about his desire to continue the story in animation with Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor in the series, and during his appearance with Durance this weekend at the Vancouver Fan Expo he spoke about the project, revealing they have some animation for the proposed series and his hope to get some of the original cast back together.

“We’re working an on animated series that picks up right after our Smallville, again telling our own story and our vision,” Welling said during the Smallville panel. “We’ve already got the animation; we just don’t have the stories yet because Al  and Miles [Al Gough and Miles Millar, Smallville‘s creators and writers] are busy making Tim Burton movies and stuff, but as soon as they are done with that, we’re going to do this. I want to be Clark’s voice, I want Erica to be Lois’s… that’s going to be the fun of it.”

In reference to the original cast, Welling revealed that Lionel Luthor, Lex’s father as played by John Glover, would have a big part in it and said “John Glover wants to do it” and named his hope to get Kristin Kreuk and Sam Jones III involved, each of whom played his girlfriend Lana Lang and best friend Pete Ross.

He did also joke “It might be tough to get Allison,” referencing Allison Mack who played his friend Chloe Sullivan and her legal troubles for taking part in the sex cult NXIVM and being found guilty of trafficking and racketeering among other charges and sentenced to prison for three years.
