Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will take inspiration from Sonic Adventure 2

April 25, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is currently cooking up experience moviegoers and classic gamers can all enjoy.

Toby Ascher, a producer on the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise, let it be known that the film is looking to take inspiration from one of the most iconic games, 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2.

The Knuckles showrunner Ascher tells GamesRadar, “[It’s] probably the most exciting thing that we’ve done in the franchise. It’s going to be this giant, fun, incredible movie that obviously takes a lot from Sonic Adventure 2 and some of the games that I know the core Sonic Team grew up loving.”

In Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic is arrested by the Guardian Units of Nations military organization due to being the supposed perpetrator of a Chaos Emerald theft. When the hedgehog learns that the true culprit is Shadow, whom he has been mistaken with, and that Eggman is up to no good again and plans to conquer the world using a planet-shattering weapon, he joins forces with his friends Tails, Knuckles, and Amy to stop both evildoers and prove his innocence.

Even though the game is considered a classic by Sonic fans, it only sold around 500,000 copies due to being released at the end of the Dreamcast’s lifetime.

Keanu Reeves recently joined Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to voice the iconic Shadow the Hedgehog. Reeves will join Ben Schwartz as Sonic, and Jim Carrey will return for another outing as Dr. Robotnik. Idris Elba and Colleen O’Shaughnessey will round out the voice cast as Knuckles and Tails, respectively.

Jeff Fowler is returning as the director for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which wrapped production back in March. The spinoff series Knuckles, which streams on Paramount+ later this month, will precede the film.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 stars James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, and Jim Carrey reprising their roles alongside Keanu Reeves, Krysten Ritter, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set for release on December 20th, 2024.
