Sony Schedule Shake-Up: The Karate Kid moves to 2025 as Kraven the Hunter shifts to December

April 27, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Kraven the Hunter found an opening and pounced on its box-office prey.

Sony Pictures has postponed The Karate Kid’s planned December release date, and Kraven the Hunter will replace it. The Marvel superhero film goes from a planned August release date to Dec. 13, 2024; it will screen in IMAX and premium large formats.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars in Kraven the Hunter, directed by J.C. Chandor. Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott, and Russell Crowe are also stars.

The Karate Kid’s move puts it in place with some exciting brand synergy. The new film will premiere just after the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai debuts on Netflix.

Jonathan Entwistle directs Sony’s new Karate Kid from a screenplay by Rob Lieber. The film will star Ben Wang and returning franchise actors Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio. Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, Ming-Na Wen, Aramis Knight, and Wyatt Oleff are joining the trio.

The Variety report on the story noted that Sony could’ve possibly moved Kraven the Hunter to be an “R-rated option for the end of the year.” No official reason was given for the film release schedule shake-up.

Check out the trailer for Kraven the Hunter below…

Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film.

Kraven the Hunter is being directed by J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year) from a script by Art Marcum (Iron Man), Richard Wenk (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back), and Matt Holloway (Uncharted), and takes place within Sony’s shared Marvel universe alongside Venom and Morbius. The film also stars Russell Crowe, Alessandro Nivola, Levi Miller, and Christopher Abbott.
