Spider-Man: Homecoming tops $700 million worldwide

August 13, 2017 by Justin Cook

This weekend, Marvel Studios added another notch to its belt, as Spider-Man: Homecoming passed $700 million in ticket sales at the worldwide box office. Homecoming has become the 8th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to pass the milestone and already topped the box office totals of such recent Marvel releases as Ant-Man and Doctor Strange.

The film still lags behind this summer’s other two superhero releases, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Wonder Woman, which brought in $861 million and $797 million. While Guardians’ box office run is practically over, Homecoming and Wonder Woman still have a little bit of gas still left in the tank. On top of remaining domestic (US and Canada) sales, Wonder Woman will debut in Japan at the end of the month, likely pushing it way past the $800 million figure, and Homecoming is due out in China next month.

Homecoming sits as the fourth highest-grossing Spider-Man film domestically, behind all three installments of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. It topped Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and will soon do so worldwide (not adjusted for inflation) as well. From this Friday to Sunday, the film took in an additional $6.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $306.4 million.

It’s been a solid box office run for Homecoming, and the film has certainly recovered since its worrying 61% second-weekend drop, proving its legs in recent weeks by not dropping by more than 50%.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May, alongside Marvel veterans Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Chris Evans as Captain America. New additions to the cast include Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Bokeem Woodbine, Tyne Daly, Michael Barbieri, Abraham Attah, Hannibal Buress, Kenneth Choi, Angourie Rice, Michael Chernus, Michael Mando, Logan Marshall-Green and Jennifer Connelly.
