Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung closer to The Force Awakens all-time domestic record at the weekend box-office, while Ridley Scott’s adaptation of The Dog Stars crashed-and-burned.
Let’s start with Disney and 20th Century’s The Dog Stars, which came into the weekend with middling reviews and an $80 million budget, but bombed with just $8 million domestically and a fifth placed finish.
The Ridley Scott-directed dud was beaten out by the film which wouldn’t die, Ketchup Entertainment’s Coyote vs. Acme, which went from a controversial Warner Bros. tax write-off to a third place debut with $13.5 million at the North American box-office.
Neither of those films could touch Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which held onto the top spot for a fifth week, dropping 44% for a weekend haul of $22.2 million. This took its domestic total to $891 million, which is just $45 million behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens near-decade old total of $936 million. Spidey’s worldwide gross currently stands at $2.332 billion.
Just behind it, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continued its impressive box-office march, earning $14.6 million over the 3-day weekend for a domestic haul of $564 million and global tally of $1.55 billion.
