Star Trek 4 writer reveals that the sequel is “still on the tracks”

September 26, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

The Captain’s Log for Star Trek 4 must be running low on storage space, because the trapped-in-limbo Trek has suffered a director departure, had its release date removed from the Paramount schedule, and even Chris Pine has admitted he knows nothing about it. However, in a recent interview the film’s writer Lindsey Anderson Beer has revealed that the sequel is “still on the tracks”.

While doing the rounds for her directorial debut, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, Beer told Collider that she had stepped away from Star Trek 4 to take the reins on the Stephen King sequel, but that the further voyages of the Starship Enterprise were still on her radar.

When asked about whether Star Trek 4 was still happening, she said “It is, it’s still on the tracks. I love that project, and it was another one that I had to hop off of to direct this movie, and that was a hard thing to do. But I love that everybody involved with that project.”

The fourth installment of the Chris Pine captained Kelvin timeline has been in-and-out of development hell since 2016’s really-rather-good Star Trek Beyond underperformed at the box-office, but this news offers a glimmer of hope for fans of the franchise that we might still get another adventure featuring the J.J. Abrams-assembled crew.

Since Beyond‘s $343M worldwide gross was deemed a disappointment, we’ve had talk of the Tarantino Trek, a version from Fargo creator Noah Hawley that stalled in 2020, and a direct sequel which would have seen Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk meet up with his father George Kirk, played by Chris Hemsworth, reprising his role from the 2009 reboot as Kirk Sr., but talks quickly broke down.
