Star Wars: Jyn Erso’s initial Rogue One origin story was too similar to Rey’s

April 17, 2020 by Samuel Brace

One of the original origin stories for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s Jyn Erso was deemed to be too similar to Rey’s so had to be changed.

The new era of Star Wars films has seen the introduction of some big new characters, including two female leads. One being Rey (Daisy Ridley) in the Sequel Trilogy and the other Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) in Rogue One.

Jyn and Rey also originally had a bit more in common than their sex and affinity for rebellions. As Jyn was also going to be scavenger too until this was deemed to close to Rey’s starting point. Writer Chris Weitz  revealed the following to CineFix:

“At one point Jyn was already a rebel soldier. We toyed with various other possibilities, that she was a deserter, she was a Rey-like scavenger, but obviously you can’t do that once you learn what the other hand of the Star Wars universe is doing.”

The story they settled on, in the end, seemed to work for all involved as Rogue One remains one of the most popular Star Wars films in recent memory.

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story features a cast that includes Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Diego Luna (Milk), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises), Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Alan Tudyk (Con Man), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), Genevieve O’Reilly (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith), Jimmy Smits (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), James Earl Jones (Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope), Valene Kane (The Fall), Alistair Petrie (The Night Manager), Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode IV – Return of the Jedi) and Jonathan Aris (Sherlock).
