Star Wars: The Force Awakens overtakes The Avengers to become fourth-biggest movie of all time

January 5, 2016 by Gary Collinson

With the film on the verge of overtaking James Cameron’s Avatar to become the highest-grossing domestic release in history, Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens has now overtaken fellow Disney blockbuster The Avengers to climb to fourth in the list of the biggest worldwide earners of all time.

The Force Awakens has now amassed $750.2 million in North America – just shy of Avatar’s $760.5 million – and could potentially become the first movie to hit $1 billion domestically. Internationally, it has a further $786 million, giving it $1.536 billion and counting.

With the film still going strong in most markets, and China yet to come, it’s pretty much a certainty that The Force Awakens will become only the movie to gross $2 billion, with Avatar’s worldwide record of $2.788 billion still a possibility.
