Supergirl lands full series order at CBS

May 6, 2015 by James Garcia

It’s a bird… It’s a plane… It’s… super good news! Ahead of the upfronts next week, CBS has officially granted a full series order to Supergirl.

The series – developed by Arrow and The Flash producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg along with Chuck alum Ali Adler – was given a series commitment last fall, and has picked up quite a bit of buzz ever since. Where it will wind up on CBS’ schedule hasn’t been announced, and likely won’t be until the aforementioned upfronts next week, when the network unveils all of its plans for the upcoming fall television season.

Despite sharing a creative team with the CW DC shows, Supergirl is expected to stand independently from The Flash and Arrow – though I guess crossovers are never out of the question in today’s superhero-driven climate. The show stars Glee‘s Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, who escaped Krypton’s destruction and has been living on Earth (and hiding her abilities) ever since. Now, at age 24, she’s ready to step into the light and become a superhero, much like her superpowered cousin (who will only have a tertiary, background role in the show to establish his existence).

Joining Benoist are True Blood‘s Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Personal Affairs‘ Robert Gant as Zor-El, Nashville‘s Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Smash‘s Jeremy Jordan as Winslow Schott a.k.a. Toyman, Homeland‘s David Harewood as Hank Henshaw/Cyborg Superman, The Mentalist actor Owain Yeoman as supervillain Vartox, Grey’s Anatomy alum Chyler Leigh as Kara’s foster sister Alexandra Danvers, and former Kryptonians Dean Cain and Helen Slater (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and 1984’s Supergirl) as Kara’s foster parents.
