Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell set for R-rated rom-com from Will Gluck

January 14, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) have signed on to star in a new R-rated romantic comedy from director Will Gluck (Easy A).

The as-yet-untitled film is based on a script from Ilana Wolpert which Sony acquired last year, and Gluck is currently rewriting. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but filming is set to get underway in February with Gluck also producing alongside Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum

The project continues Sweeney with Sony after her recent work on the Marvel movie Madame Web, while she has also recently signed on to two other projects at the studio in The Registration and Barbarella. The Emmy-nominated actress is executive producing both of those, along with Gluck’s rom-com.

Powell meanwhile is coming off the box office smash hit Top Gun: Maverick and Korean War film Devotion, and his upcoming slate includes sci-fi action-thriller Deputy X and buddy comedy Foreign Relations. He’s also co-written a script for a Captain Planet and the Planeteers movie which Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to produce.

Director Will Gluck made his name with rom-coms Easy A and Friends with Benefits, before going on to direct the Annie remake and two Peter Rabbit movies. His upcoming producing credits include an adaptation of the video game Just Dance and Disney’s live-action Aristocats.
