Syfy cancels Krypton, passes on Lobo spinoff series

August 17, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Syfy’s stint in the DC Universe is coming to an end, with Deadline reporting that the network has opted against a season three renewal for the Superman prequel series Krypton, as well as passing on the previously announced Lobo spinoff.

Krypton takes place on Superman’s homeworld, two generations before its description, and follows Kal-El’s grandfather Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) as he fights to save the planet from destruction. Also featuring in the cast were Georgina Campbell, Shaun Sipos, Colin Salmon, Ann Ogbomo, Aaron Pierre, Rasmus Hardiker, Wallis Day, Blake Ritson, Ian McElhinney, and Emmett J. Scanlan – the latter of whom was set to headline his own Lobo spinoff series.

Although it proved to be a solid hit for Syfy upon its premiere in 2018, ratings dropped by 50% in its second season and – given the expensive licensing fee and lack of streaming rights – it seems the show is no longer viable for the network.

All hope may not be lost for Krypton however, as Warner Bros. is said to be in talks with other outlets about continuing the show, with the WB-owned streaming services DC Universe and HBO Max also under consideration.
