Taika Waititi says there’s no Thor: Love and Thunder Director’s Cut: “Directors need to be controlled sometimes”

July 10, 2022 by EJ Moreno

We are in a new era of the Director’s Cut. Since we saw the The Snyder Cut movement for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, it seems that every film gets an online campaign for more footage.

One person we won’t see trying to get an extended or different cut of their films however is Taika Waititi, who spoke to NME about his latest project Thor: Love and Thunder, stating that he isn’t a fan of director’s cuts and that some filmmakers need to be reined in by studios.

“I’ve been thinking about director’s cuts. I watch director’s cuts of a lot of other directors. They suck. Director’s cuts are not good. Directors need to be controlled sometimes and if I was to say, ‘Ah you wanna watch my director’s cut? It’s four and a half hours long!’ It’s not good at four and a half hours. There’s a lot of cup-of-tea breaks in there, you don’t even have to pause it.”

Waititi went on to add that if there were an extended cut of his latest Thor movie, it would be to add even more jokes. Yes, Waititi wants more jokes added to Love and Thunder.

“I’d say my cut would probably have a few more jokes in there. There might be a couple of deleted scenes but as I always say, a scene is deleted because it’s not good enough to be in the film. I think the deleted scenes section on the DVD, not that they use them anymore, should just be a list of the scenes and no links so you can’t click on them!”

We shall see what the digital and physical release of Thor: Love and Thunder brings; for now though, fans can find the latest MCU currently in cinemas around the world.

Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Love and Thunder” finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey, unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Thor: Ragnarok‘s Taika Waititi, who also reprises his CGI role as Korg, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor), alongside the returning Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Jaimie Alexander (Lady Sif), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Dave Bautista (Drax) and Sean Gunn (Kraglin), with Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari) as Gorr the God Butcher and Russell Crowe (Man of Steel) as Zeus.

Thor: Love and Thunder is in cinemas now.
