The Handmaids Tale’s Ann Dowd joins Leslie Odom Jr. and Ellen Burstyn in Blumhouse’s Exorcist sequel

August 3, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

If the idea of Halloween’s David Gordon Green making a legacy sequel to one of the scariest movies of all time doesn’t give you the chills, then how about if we told you that the The Exorcist had summoned character actor extraordinaire Ann Dowd to join its cast.

Deadline reports that Dowd will battle demonic forces alongside One Night In Miami‘s Leslie Odom Jr. and star of the 1973 original Ellen Burstyn, who is reprising her role as Chris MacNeil, the mother of Linda Blair’s iconic head-spinner.

Dowd most recently wowed in last year’s Mass, but is perhaps most well known for her Emmy Award winning performance as Aunt Lydia in Hulu and MGM’s The Handmaid’s Tale, or as the equally complex cult leader Patti Levin on HBO’s criminally underrated The Leftovers.

Universal and Peacock paid $400M for the rights to The Exorcist, so it’s no surprise that they’ve turned to the the Blumhouse team of Gordon Green, Danny McBride, and Scott Teams in order to create this new story alongside Peter Sattler (Camp X-Ray), considering that two-thirds of their Halloween Trilogy has already grossed almost $400M at the worldwide box-office, with October’s Halloween Ends still to come.

Directed by William Friedkin and based on William Peter Blatty’s novel of the same name, The Exorcist revolved around the demonic possession of a young girl, and featured a cast that included Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Linda Blair and Jason Miller.

A huge success at the box office, and ludicrously banned for 11 years in the UK, it spawned the sequels Exorcist II: The Heretic and The Exorcist III, as well as prequels Exorcist: The Beginning and Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist.
