The War Master performs his greatest trick in new Worlds of Doctor Who adventure

October 14, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Big Finish Productions has released The Worlds of Doctor Who – The War Master: His Greatest Trick a brand-new audio drama box set for the War Master. Sir Derek Jacobi returns as the Time War era incarnation of the Master in four brand-new audio episodes, and in these latest tales, he’s finally had enough of the never-ending war.

Both the Time Lords and the Daleks are out to get the fleeing Master, but despite this, he still loves having opportunities to cause a little chaos. These four new adventures for the Master see him cause mayhem for a school for alien girls, a deep-space refugee camp, and a ship of adventurers from Ancient Gallifrey.

The box set kicks off with The Grievance Bureau by Lizzie Hopley, where the Master has been caught on a misdemeanour. With both the Time Lords and the Daleks wanting him erased from time, can they both come together to get rid of a mutual enemy?  However, as the show trial starts, it looks as though the Master’s misdemeanour is not as trivial as they first thought.

In Last Girl Standing by Katharine Armitage, the Master is laying low as the ‘Head Master’ (pun intended) of an exclusive alien girls’ school. But when pressed by a suspicious teacher, he begins to weave a twisted competition for the Head Girl. A competition that will have only one winner.

The Worst of All Evils by Ian Winterton sees the Master’s TARDIS damaged by Daleks and arriving onto Horoka – the hub of Earth Empire’s transmat network, and the site of a refugee camp. Taken to the hospital by the ever-hopeful activist Carla Zheng, the Master soon causes a problems for the camp.

Finally, in The Blue Shift Ritual by Adam Christopher, the Master is once again on the run from both factions of the Time War, but when he comes across an out-of-control time capsule containing members of a crew from Ancient Gallifrey, he sees their mission to the legendary planet of Arkheparas to prevent the Cult of the Infinite from activating their great Engine as just the thing to help him escape.

Joining Sir Derek Jacobi are Bethany Antonia (House of Dragon) Laura Aikman (Gavin & Stacey), Sèverine Howell-Meri (Hanna), Sophie Shad (Grange Hill) and Darragh Cowley (Masters of the Air), Ben Arogundade, Elizabeth Hollingshead, Jessica Dennis, Isabelle Farah, Sapphire Joy, Quanna Luo Masterson, Richard Reed, Andrew James Spooner, Lizzie Hopley, and Sarah Whitehouse.
