Those Game of Thrones spinoffs are still in the works, but Season 8 remains HBO’s top priority

July 27, 2017 by Jordan Jones

HBO doesn’t want you to think that they have forgotten about the recently announced Game of Thrones spinoffs. But they also don’t want you to think that Season 8 isn’t their top priority at the moment.

According to Deadline, HBO president of programming Casey Bloys recently provided an update on the Game of Thrones spinoffs, and where they currently fit on HBO’s priority list: “The No. 1 priority in all of this is the final season of Game of Thrones,” said Bloys. “I don’t want to do anything with a spinoff or anything that detracts or distracts from that.”

A few months ago we were treated to news that HBO and author George R.R. Martin are developing several spinoffs set in the Game of Thrones (or A Song of Ice and Fire) universe. This announcement came at a time when most of the Game of Thrones news revolved around the penultimate and final seasons of the show. George said on his blog, at the time, that HBO may actually be making multiple spinoffs.

It is very reassuring that HBO is putting all of their time, and effort into concluding the main series in a (hopefully) satisfying way before pushing forward with the universe. This bodes well for the main series, and also for the spinoffs themselves. Season 8 will definitely have time to provide an epic conclusion: Season 8 is going to consist of only six episodes, but each may come in at a whopping 90 minutes in length.

Game of Thrones season seven is currently airing on HBO and Sky Atlantic.
