Toaplan Arcade Garage: Flying Fire Shark brings classic shoot-em-ups to PS4 and Switch this August

May 13, 2026 by Andrew Newton

Retro and classic games publisher Clear River Games has announced that it will bring Toaplan Arcade Garage: Flying Fire Shark to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on 29th August. This collection of retro shoot-em-ups features the legendary Shark series, which influenced the future of vertical-scrolling shmups. Watch the new trailer below…

The collection kicks off with the worldwide arcade version of Flying Shark. This first game in the series was praised for having finely tuned difficulty and simple, straightforward rules. Having gained such renown in the arcades, Flying Shark inspired future shmup titles and was converted to multiple home systems. A later title, Fire Shark, was also hugely popular in arcades, thanks to the devastation of its screen-filling weapons.

This upcoming release will include a Super Easy Mode for both Flying Shark and Fire Shark for those who are new to the genre, but they will also include the Arcade Mode for those seeking an authentic arcade experience.

Other features included are the M2 Gadgets that can be seen on either side of the playing field (see screenshots). These have been designed to help with blind spots and give early warnings for new items. There is also Arcade Challenge Modes, Challenge Modes and a Rewind feature.

The games included in the compilation are:

  • Flying Shark (Worldwide arcade version)
  • Sky Shark (US arcade version)
  • Hisho Same (JP arcade version)
  • Fire Shark (Worldwide arcade version)
  • Same! Same! Same! (JP arcade version)
  • Same! Same! Same! (JP arcade 2-player version)

Retro enthusiasts will also be able to enjoy a variety of DLC content for the above games, which includes the arcade action platformer game Wardner.

Look out for Toaplan Arcade Garage: Flying Fire Shark , arriving digitally and physically this August on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
